Course Description

The student will study and work in a clinical setting for 16 hours per week to gain knowledge and experience. Emphasis will be in the following respiratory areas: management of the neonate and pediatric patient, practice in the home setting, practice in skilled, sub-acute care, long-term mechanical ventilation settings, ECG, and stress and sleep testing, and critical care.

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Collaborate with peers, patients, and all members of the health care team to provide quality care.
  • Modify respiratory interventions, patient education, and cardiopulmonary medications based on patient's history, clinical information, medical records, physical findings, and therapist-driven protocols.
  • Integrate procedures, clinical information, infection control, and troubleshooting to perform all cardiopulmonary procedures safely within the scope of respiratory skill.
  • Develop responsibility and accountability for respiratory care and self while practicing within the legal, ethical, and regulatory scope of respiratory within the clinical setting.
  • Create effective verbal, nonverbal, and written communication with patients, peers, and all members of the health care team.
