Course Description
This course will offer an overview of the history and philosophical foundations of probation, parole, and community corrections in the United States. The course also includes study of the organization and operations of probation and parole agencies as particular segments of the criminal justice system.
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain (in general terms) the criminal justice system and especially the probation and parole components.
- Discuss the various theories on offender treatment.
- Explain the differences of juvenile probation and parole programs from that of adults programs.
- Explain the various methods used to evaluate community treatment programs.
- Discuss the origination of community corrections as well as the general nature of community corrections programs today.
- Explain what a presentence investigation is and it’s impact on sentencing.
- Discuss the differences between probation and parole.
- Discuss the various types of probation programs available.
- Explain differences in jails and prisons along with their respective programs.
- Explain what parole is and the philosophy behind it.
- Discuss the various types of parole programs offered to parolees.
- Discuss the organization aspects of probation and parole operations.
