Course Description

The student will be able to explain the principles of design of weldments, weldability of metals, welding defects, weld testing and inspection, and preheating and post-heating. The student also will weld various joint designs in the vertical and overhead projections using a variety of electrodes.

Prerequisite(s)

WELD 1114 with a grade of C or better - Must be completed prior to taking this course.

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Recognize and understand American Welding Society basic welding symbols
  • Weld in the flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions
  • Set parameters for given electrodes and positions using the SMAW process
  • Recognize and solve shield metal arc welding discontinuities
  • Understand carbon and alloyingagents and their affect on a given weldment
  • Pass visual prior to destructive test will test on 3rd test attempt prior to moving on to next position.
