Students will study representative characteristics and genres from major historical eras. Emphasis will be on perceptive listening. The first unit will address basic elements of music, music terminology, and performing ensembles. The second unit is a survey of the style periods: Medieval/Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism (18th century), Romanticism (19th century), Impressionism (late 19th century/early 20th century), and current trends in music.
