Course Description
This course covers basic concepts and methods necessary for effective start-up and management of a small business. Topics include planning, legal aspects, financing, accounting, marketing, and management. Theoretical and practical learning exercises will be incorporated in the class. This course may be taken under the Pass/Fail grading option.
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Understand the importance of planning in the start-up of a business
- Develop knowledge of different types of financing and sources of money for business operations
- Identify the basic accounting statements and how they relate to a business’ operations
- Develop a marketing strategy for a small business
- Identify different taxes for which a small business may be liable and how to plan and organize so a to limit tax liability
- Prepare financial information to use as an evaluating tool and a document to procure additional financing
- Identify various types of expenses and use them to determine how to set various prices
