Course Description
This course will focus on the application of proofreading skills and English grammar, usage, and spelling. Students will review formatting for business letters and reports and will proofread business documents for content, grammar, punctuation, expression, and mechanical errors.
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Use proofreader’s marks to indicate corrections
- Apply the basic rules for number style
- Identify letter and memo styles and be able to correct formatting errors.
- Detect and correct formatting errors in memo reports, business reports, minutes, and manuscripts
- Detect errors in special number formats such as percentages, calculations, and measurements
- Proofread tables, spreadsheets, and databases to ensure accuracy.
- Proofread specialized forms such as invoices and purchase orders to ensure accuracy.
- Recognize and correct four types of inconsistencies found in business documents: treating similar things differently, conveying unintentional bias, making sequencing errors, and overlooking contradictory information
- Edit to avoid wordiness, redundancy, overused words, and too many phrases and clauses.
- Edit documents to reflect the you-attitude.
- Identify misstrokes, repetitions, omissions, transpositions and spacing errors in written documents.
- Apply rules for forming plurals and possessives and dividing words.
- Detect and correct errors in comma usage within sentences and within parts of a letter.
- Locate, mark, and correct errors in periods, colons, exclamation points, dashes, parentheses, hyphens, semicolons, question marks, quotation marks, and underscores
- Recognize and correct errors in subject-verb agreement and pronoun-antecedent agreement
- Recognize and correct errors in the use of nominative-case and objective-case pronouns
- Recognize and correct errors in the use of who and whom.
- Recognize complete sentences and find and correct sentence fragments
