Course Description

The student will describe the principles of operation of automatic transmissions. He or she will apply industry standards of diagnosis and repair of automatic transmissions.

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Explain the basic principles and functions of an automatic transmission system in modern vehicles.
  • Describe the function of hydraulic control valves, such as pressure control valves, shift valves, and modulator valves, within an automatic transmission.
  • Evaluate the condition of automatic transmission components and determine whether they need to be replaced or repaired.
  • Explain the operation of hybrid automatic transmissions.
  • Analyze and compare the characteristics of continuously variable transmissions with traditional automatic and manual transmissions.
