Course Description
The student will be introduced to American literature from its beginnings to 1865. This course focuses on the interrelationship of social history and American writers and texts. AAS: Humanities elective.

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify, analyze, and evaluate American writers and their works
- Identify themes and characteristics of literary periods
- Understand the historical, political, and social contexts of American literature
- Demonstrate in writing his or her analysis of a specific work of literature
- Demonstrate in writing his or her analysis of a specific work of literature while incorporating secondary sources
