The student will be introduced to American literature from 1865 to the present. This course focuses on the interrelationship of social history and American writers and texts.

At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Identify, analyze, and evaluate American writers and their works
- Identify themes and characteristics of literary periods
- Understand the historical, political, and social contexts of American literature
- Demonstrate in writing their analysis of a specific work of literature
- Demonstrate in writing their analysis of a specific work of literature while incorporating secondary sources
