Course Description
This course provides students with understanding and knowledge of the health care delivery systems, medical terminology, infection control, safety, quality control, blood collection, central processing, and work skills in communication, mathematics, professionalism, and using a computer. Basic knowledge and laboratory skills in the major disciplines of clinical laboratory sciences - urinalysis, hematology, chemistry, microbiology, and immunology - will also be covered. Students will be trained to perform blood collections and simple or waived tests (CLIA Regulations). In addition, the student receives an orientation to the clinical laboratory through 10 hours of observation at the hospital.
Prerequisite(s)
Admission into the Medical Laboratory Technology Program, or consent of instructor - Must be completed prior to taking this course.

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Follow established standards for laboratory safety and infection control.
  • Describe how medical laboratories function.
  • Perform calculations used in the clinical laboratory.
  • Describe the basic components of laboratory quality programs used to evaluate the accuracy and precision of lab procedures.
  • Demonstrate the safe use of common types of general laboratory equipment.
  • Identify the equipment and supplies utilized in blood and non-blood specimen collection and describe the methods of processing and handling.
  • Apply proper technique in collection of blood by venipunctures and capillary procedures.
  • Describe how the basic processes of the body are evaluated in relation to the clinical laboratory departments of urinalysis, coagulation, hematology, microbiology, clinical chemistry and immunology.
  • Safely perform and validate CLIA waived lab assays for hematology, coagulation, microbiology, urinalysis, immunology, and clinical chemistry.
