Course Description
This course provides students with an understanding and knowledge of the health care delivery systems; medical terminology; infection control; safety; quality control; test results; central processing; and work skills such as communication, professionalism, computer, and math skills. Also included is basic knowledge and laboratory skills in the major disciplines of clinical laboratory sciences; urinalysis, hematology, chemistry, microbiology, and immunology. Students will be trained to be competent in performing simple or waived tests (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments regulations) done in hospital labs, clinics, physicians' offices, and ambulatory care settings.
Prerequisite(s)
HLTH 1404 with a grade of C or better - Must be completed prior to taking this course.

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Follow established standards for laboratory safety and infection control.
  • Describe how medical laboratories function.
  • Perform calculations used in the clinical laboratory.
  • Describe the basic components of laboratory quality programs used to evaluate the accuracy and precision of lab procedures.
  • Demonstrate the safe use of common types of general laboratory equipment.
  • Describe how the basic processes of the body are evaluated in relation to the clinical laboratory departments of urinalysis, coagulation, hematology, microbiology, clinical chemistry and immunology.
  • Safely perform and validate CLIA waived lab assays for hematology, coagulation, microbiology, urinalysis, immunology, and clinical chemistry.
