Course Description
This course will survey the growth and development of Central and South American countries from the early 19th century to the present. Special emphasis will be placed on the relationship between these Latin American countries and the United States of America. A formal paper is required in this course. This course satisfies the non-Western studies requirement for education majors. IAI: S2 920N.
Prerequisite(s)
Appropriate assessment score or ENGL 1422 with a grade of C or better - Must be taken either prior to or at the same time as this course.
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Distinguish between primary and secondary sources as the foundation of modern historical scholarship
- Interpret primary sources critically by analyzing their historical contexts
- Formulate historical interpretations, both orally and in writing, and defend them critically with reference to primary and secondary sources
- Demonstrate an understanding of the political, economic, and social forces within the following historical movements in Latin America: The Encounter Era, The Colonial Era, The Independence Era, The Post-Colonial Era, The Progress Era, The Neocolonial Era, The Nationalism Era, The Revolution Era, The Reaction Era, and The Neoliberal Era
