Course Description
The student will be introduced to American literature from its beginnings to 1865. This course focuses on the interrelationship of social history and American writers and texts. AAS: Humanities elective. IAI: H3 914.
Prerequisite(s)
Appropriate assessment score or ENGL 1422 with a grade of C or better - Must be taken either prior to or at the same time as this course.

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Identify, analyze, and evaluate American writers and their works
  • Identify themes and characteristics of literary periods
  • Understand the historical, political, and social contexts of American literature
  • Demonstrate in writing his or her analysis of a specific work of literature
  • Demonstrate in writing his or her analysis of a specific work of literature while incorporating secondary sources
