Course Description
This course is designed for the student who has little or no experience with a camera or for the experienced student who would like to revitalize his or her basic knowledge. Students will learn the basics of photography and darkroom techniques through lectures and demonstrations. Students will become proficient in darkroom practices by learning to develop film and make prints. A 35mm adjustable camera is recommended for this class. AAS: Humanities/fine arts elective.
At the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Use a fully manual 35mm camera system in order to achieve optimum film exposure in most lighting situations
- Compose photographic images while understanding the basic composition rules and aesthetic principles of the medium
- Develop and archive black-and-white films
- Print 35 mm negatives on 8x10 in. photographic paper sheets
- Address and critique photographic images in relation to photography’s elementary historical and theoretical culture
- Relate to a broad number of traditional and contemporary influential practitioners of the medium
